Administrative Director, Center For Nursing Research
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the coordination and administration of the operational and financial affairs of the Center for Nursing Research (CNR). Oversight responsibilities include monitoring the CNR’s business activities including financial, human resource, equipment and inventory, information systems and space (office and laboratory) management. Provides financial analysis and reporting and advises Associate Dean on ways to optimize operations and services. Develops and manages CNR budget.
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Responsible for the implementation and oversight of appropriate administrative structures, systems, and activities necessary for the leadership and direction to facilitate delivery of quality research services.
2. Responsible for hiring and training support staff employees in the CNR, ensuring Center coverage and day-to-day personnel management.
3. Develops the annual budget, approves expenditures, oversees revenues. Responsible for directing and overseeing the staff to ensure accurate account records and timely accounting practices in keeping with University rules and regulations. Directs the activities required to assure timely and correct payment of invoices and awards.
4. Responsible for development, execution and evaluation of the School of Nursing (SON) research resources, including the CNR Web site, which includes links to internal and external sources of information.
5. Responsible for development, execution and evaluation of the CNR research database. Oversees the maintenance of information contained in the database to assure the integrity, accuracy and confidentiality of the data.
6. Responsible for the design, execution and evaluation of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, financial and other types of report information are reliable and accurate, and the systems are compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
7. Oversees the awarding of intramural and travel funds to faculty and students. Responsible for disseminating the award availability, mechanisms, criteria for each award, selection process, expenditures and reporting requirements to internal publics and external agencies.
8. Develops and analyzes statistical information regarding research activities. Monitors trends in extramural funding for the SON and comparison institutions. Provides data for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the National Institutes of Health, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and various other regulatory and funding agencies.
9. Serves as a resource to faculty, staff and students regarding research policies and procedures, grant requirements, data retention, ethical and legal requirements. Interprets and applies policies and procedures to a wide variety of research and research training grants.
10. Provides limited research post-award support for faculty and full research post-award support for students. Oversees student research grant administration. Trains doctoral students in research grant administration.
11. Serves on research-related Health Science Center, local and regional committees as appropriate. Serves as liaison for CNR with other UT departments such as Office of Sponsored Projects, Office of Research Services, Legal Affairs, Office of Research Affairs, Office of Research Support Committees, and Environmental Health and Safety.
12. Prepares the research portion of the SON Annual Report and other reports as requested by internal and external constituents.
13. Responsible for performance reviews, counseling, salary recommendations, and other human resource issues for direct reports shown above.
14. Works with UT departments and outside vendors/contractors to purchase, lease, maintain and/or upgrade equipment as needed for cost-effective, high-quality research services. Responsible for asset and inventory management for the CNR.
15. Coordinates approvals for research grant and contract proposals to ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional rules, procedures, and guidelines pertinent to each proposal. Prepares or directs pre-award budgets for research and research training grants and subcontracts. Prepares budgets for CNR service contracts.
16. Assists faculty and students in seeking funding opportunities for specific areas of interest. Advises faculty and students on research software and electronic communication issues.
17. Provides support for SON faculty and students with the institutional review board (IRB) processes.
18. Coordinates planning, implementation, and evaluation of ongoing and special programs and activities (e.g., research seminars and Visiting Scholars Program, Summer Science Program, local, regional and national research workshops).
19. Coordinates design, building and furnishing of the research space in the School of Nursing and Student Community Center building.
20. Designs and oversees systems for security and protection of research data, equipment and personnel.
Certification/Skills:
Must have strong management skills, interpersonal and problem solving skills. Good working knowledge of management information systems, word processing, database and spreadsheet applications required.
Minimum Education:
Master’s degree in business administration, behavioral or basic science or its equivalent.
Minimum Experience:
Five years of professional experience in a career compatible with research and research administration.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
