Reporting to the president of UTHealth, the Dean is the chief administrative and academic officer of the Cizik School of Nursing and is responsible for its strategic, research, academic, clinical, and business affairs. The Dean is accountable for providing leadership throughout the school by working with the associate and assistant deans, program coordinators, directors, faculty members, and administrative staff. As part of UTHealth’s executive administration, the Dean interfaces with central administrative offices, advisory councils, accrediting agencies, and various professional organizations. The Dean works to achieve the mission and goals of the nursing school within guidelines established by the Board of Regents’ Rules and Regulations and the University of Texas System.


Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership with the highest ethical standards and integrity for the  teaching, research and practice mission of the School of Nursing.
  • Serves as the executive representative of the School of Nursing to the rest of the health science center, Central Administration and the UT System, leading School of Nursing efforts toward achieving UTHealth’s mission and goals.
  • Creates strong, collaborative programs and research with other UTHealth  schools, Texas Medical Center institutions and University of Texas institutions. Supports a research infrastructure that provides training for faculty, Opportunities for grant funding, and efficient management of the School’s research portfolio.
  • Creates and sustains a highly developed and supportive learning and research environment for students and investigators.

Research
  • Creates strong, collaborative programs and research with other UTHealth schools, Texas Medical Center institutions, and University of Texas institutions. Supports a research infrastructure that provides training for faculty, opportunities for grant funding, and efficient management of the School’s research portfolio.
  • Creates and sustains a highly developed and supportive learning and research environment for students and investigators.

Operations
  • Manages and evaluates the activities of the Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Department Chairs, Program Coordinators, Directors and other senior staff of the School. Accountable for overall School productivity in instruction, research, practice, and service responsibilities.
  • Determines the School’s administrative organization for optimal effectiveness.
  • Supports faculty governance and academic freedom.
  • Provides leadership for the financial operations for the school and managing the budget in a responsible manner, ensuring that the budget is guided by the mission and strategic priorities of the School and the requirements of its parent institution.
  • Plans and recommends physical facilities and research equipment priorities.
  • Works collaboratively with UTHealth colleagues to effectively communicate the achievements of the school in research, clinical practice, and service to the public to enhance institutional reputation. Creates an environment that attracts, retains, and values a diverse workforce and student body.
  • Builds a strong leadership team for the School while encouraging open and honest evaluation of all aspects of the school’s program.
  • Designs and executes an effective system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, financial and patient confidentiality information is protected, and the School is in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Education
  • Recruits and trains outstanding students (according to an Enrollment Management Plan) who will become the next generation of leaders, clinical innovators, and nurse scientists.
  • Recruits and retains outstanding faculty who are committed to conducting cutting-edge nursing research and applying research findings to enhance student learning and improve clinical practice.

Development
  • Designs and implements strategies for increased corporate and individual philanthropic support for the nursing school’s priorities in research and education, as well as for increased funding from the Texas Legislature for programs and facilities.

Qualifications:
  • Doctorate and master’s degree in Nursing
  • Background in nursing clinical science
  • Current or eligible RN licensure to practice nursing in the State of Texas

Ideal Experience:
  • Substantial experience in academic administration (min. of five years) at an accredited nursing school.
  • Experience in enlarging the research mission of a nursing school, including developing junior faculty members and recruiting senior research faculty to fill endowed positions.
  • Significant academic leadership experience with a progressive record of transformative change and collaborative advancement. Experience in setting and articulating an academic vision, expanding the research enterprise, setting and executing a strategy, directing recruitment, overseeing finances and budgeting and valuing philanthropy.
  • Experience in large interdisciplinary team science to insure input from and commitment by stakeholders, including the leadership team, faculty, and students.
  • Excellent academic accomplishments and credentials with experience and reputation necessary to ensure the continuation and enhancement of the missions of the UTHealth School of Nursing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and success in faculty development and succession planning, including department chairs, assistant and associate deans and senior administrative staff.
  • Strong familiarity with new educational modalities, such as online learning and social media apps.
  • Demonstrated high-level managerial and business acumen with the ability to motivate and mentor a senior leadership team and provide the necessary guidance and direction to achieve strategic goals.
  • An understanding of the financial pressures facing state universities, grant funded research, and schools of nursing. Ability to problem-solve for institutional effectiveness despite fiscal constraints.
  • An established ability to function effectively and comfortably in a complex environment with multiple lines of authority and responsibility. Must demonstrate the principals of “servant” leadership and be transparent, cooperative and collaborative.
  • Able to build consensus among relevant and diverse constituencies outside theSchool.
